Tips for storage and maintenance of 3D printing filament

Everyone knows that 3D printing machines need maintenance. In fact, the same is true for printing material. Take FDM3D printing filament as an example. If they are not properly maintained and exposed to the air for a long time, the filament will be permeated by moisture in the air until they are destroyed. If you accidentally use this kind of damp filament, the quality of the printed model will be poor, and it will cause the machine to malfunction or even be damaged. Therefore, we still need to pay attention to the maintenance of 3d filament 3d printer material. First of all, how to identify whether the 3d printing material including PLA filament , PLA+ filament , PETG filament, ABS filament , ASA filament, Carbon fiber filament and other commonly 3d filament are damaged by moisture?

1. Whether the material are extruded uniformly, and whether there is popping and cracking sound;

2. Observe whether there are abnormal spots or bubbles;

3. Whether the adhesion between the platform layer and the layer of the component has become smaller;

4. Observe the surface of the printed model Whether blurry or complex textures appear.

If there is one of these conditions, there is a high probability that the consumable is damaged.

Drying in an oven:

first set the temperature (such as PLA: about 40-45°C, ABS and nylon: about 80°C), wait until the oven reaches the target temperature before putting in the 3d materials, and leave it for 4-6 hours so that the moisture can be removed Evaporated, it should be noted that during the baking process, ensure that the oven is maintained at the target temperature; open the oven door a little, and turn on the top fan. 2. Use a food dehydrator for drying, which is milder than an oven, and the operation is simpler and safer. Set the dehydrator to a suitable temperature (such as PLA: about 40-45°C, ABS and nylon: about 80°C or available temperature).

If you have purchased a lot of consumables, or have unpacked them and will not use them for a long time, it is recommended to put them in a sealed space, and put some dry bags after unpacking them.

Step 1: Prepare cheap materials—sealed bags, adhesive tape, stickers for marking, silica gel desiccant (reusable after moisture absorption and drying, saving money), first pack the filament in a sealed bag, and then put 2 packs in it Silica gel desiccant creates an efficient dehumidification environment.

Step 2: mark the date. Stick a label with the date (such as the time of receipt) on the surface of the sealed bag, which can remind you to use filament as appropriate at a glance.

Step 3: Reinforce the sealed bag. Cut two pieces of tape 4-5cm long, stick one piece of tape on the edge of the opening, stick the front and back sides tightly together, open the bag repeatedly, its side is easy to be damaged, sticking the tape can prolong the service life of the sealed bag .

Step 4: Add some pieces of paper between the 3d print materials to increase friction to prevent slipping, and finally squeeze out the air in the bag, and pull the sealing strip to ensure complete sealing.
